"Howling at the Moon" herstory
New Moon published "How Aggravating" stories in the very first issue of the magazine. "How Aggravating" is a place for girls to point out what's unfair in the world, and New Moon has always believed it's important for girls to have such a place. But in 1997, the Girls Editorial Board decided they wanted another place for readers to celebrate good things that are happening for girls.
In the January/February 1998 issue of New Moon, the GEB announced a new department that would celebrate gender equity accomplishments.
The GEB asked readers to help them find a name for the department, and they offered "How Enlightening" as one idea.
Caitlin McDonough, then 13 years old, of Massachusets, suggested "Howling at the Moon" instead. The GEB liked it, and introduced readers to "Howling at the Moon" in the July/August 1998 issue (shown here). The rest is herstory!

Survey says...
Wow! So far, almost everyone 13 and older has said younger girls SHOULD look forward to turning 13. Do you agree? Disagree? Tell us what you think--take the survey.
We're really excited that so many girls 13 and older have taken the survey! We'd really like to hear from some younger girls, too. You can help us--tell your friends, teammates, sisters, cousins, and everyone else you know to take New Moon's survey. Everyone will have a chance to win prizes from the New Moon Store, like this "Be Your Dream" sleep shirt!

Survey responses pouring in!
Thank you to all the girls and women who have already taken our survey! We can't wait to hear what everyone has to say about New Moon and turning 13. Check out a few of the first responses:
"Becoming a teen does not mean that you are suddenly going to act like some person that doesn't know anything and is going to start acting mean to be cool. That is why I like New Moon; it teaches girls that being a teenager does not mean that you have to act like every other girl in your school--you can be an individual and be cool."
"New Moon is amazing, and I am so glad that all of you work so hard on it. I really love getting it in the mail and reading a magazine that is all about life. Not the way you look and what products you should buy and how you have to have a boyfriend. But instead it is just about...me. I guess that is what I mean. It is about every girl that is out there and I am so grateful that is is there for all of us."All survey responses are confidential and anonymous. Plus, once you take the survey, you can download the New Moon Birthday Party Kit, and you'll be entered in our birthday prize drawing!
