Poem from a New Moon reader
THIRTEEN
by Cheyenne Parr
the clouds are falling.
i'm upside down and
sideways at the same time.
air is pressing down on my chest
five hundred miles of sky on top of me...
the moon is so far away but
i can still see it...
why?
i'm trapped
caught between the earth and the
universe.
i belong nowhere
no place is big enough for
what i need
the whole sky couldn't hold my emotions;
i could fill up an ocean with tears
i'm thirteen...
the ground is dropping from under my feet
will i rest ever again on stable earth?
Girls, send me YOUR stories and poems about being 13!
I'll post some of them on this blog for everyone to read. :)

We're going on an adventure!
Seven years ago, we held the first New Moon Dogsledding Adventure for girls and their parents! Today, two of our adult editors travelled to Ely, Minnesota, for this month's dogsledding adventure. They'll be joined by Girls Editorial Board Members Clare and Sonja this weekend. Our guides from Wintergreen Dog Sledding lead the mushing during the day, and New Moon editors lead writing workshops in the evenings. New Moon also hosts a Dolphin Camp every summer--the next one is scheduled for July 6-11, 2006. If you've ever dreamed of swimming with dolphins, here's your chance!
For information about future dogsledding adventures, email info@dogsledding.com or call 218-365-6022.

Coming of Age Day
Thirteen is an important age for most girls in the U.S. because it's the beginning of the teenage years. At 13, girls are just a few years shy of getting their driver's licenses, voting, and other activities that mark the transition into adulthood.
People are considered "of age" at different times in different cultures. In Japan, people celebrate their passage into adulthood at age 20. For more information and some great photos, check out this story about Coming of Age Day, which was celebrated yesterday in Japan.
At what age do you think girls turn into adults?

Turning Beauty Inside Out
This Sunday, New Moon's Girls Editorial Board will finish most of their work on the next "25 Beautiful Girls" issue! This extra-special issue will be published in May of 2006. The first "25 Beautiful Girls" issue was published in May of 2000. Our readers loved it so much, the GEB decided to make "25 Beautiful Girls" an annual issue.

Also in May of 2000, the GEB held a press conference in New York announcing "We'll Show You Beauty Day." Later, they renamed it "Turn Beauty Inside Out Day," and TBIO grew into a public education campaign that features an annual conference/retreat for girls and their parents.
This year, the TBIO campaign is focusing on the music industry for the first time. Learn more about it and register for the 2006 retreat at www.tbio.org!
