"Howling at the Moon" herstory
New Moon published "How Aggravating" stories in the very first issue of the magazine. "How Aggravating" is a place for girls to point out what's unfair in the world, and New Moon has always believed it's important for girls to have such a place. But in 1997, the Girls Editorial Board decided they wanted another place for readers to celebrate good things that are happening for girls.
In the January/February 1998 issue of New Moon, the GEB announced a new department that would celebrate gender equity accomplishments.
The GEB asked readers to help them find a name for the department, and they offered "How Enlightening" as one idea.
Caitlin McDonough, then 13 years old, of Massachusets, suggested "Howling at the Moon" instead. The GEB liked it, and introduced readers to "Howling at the Moon" in the July/August 1998 issue (shown here). The rest is herstory!
